About the movie

848: The Criminalization of America: Directed by Thomas Freeman Jr.. With Tommy Mickens, Amy Povah, Akbar Pray, Isaac Wright Jr.. 848 is a true-crime doc series about the 848 drug statute, which requires convicted drug kingpins to spend the rest of their lives in prison potentially. Under the First Step Act, some of these former kingpins are eligible for release from prison. The catch is, itÃffÃ'¢EUR(TM)s not an automatic release. You have to have a recommendation from the warden of your prison, get approval from your sentencing judge, or receive a presidential pardon. Each ten-episode season of the doc-series will profile three 848 lifers, their pre-prison life, as well as their 25+ years in prison and their fight for freedom. The series will feature interviews with friends, family, community leaders, and supporters and tell the story of three former Kingpins fighting for freedom and how their incarceration has affected their families and community.
